چکیده

Virtually all mail sorting machines currently used in China only recognize post code and ignore the useful destination address information on the envelopes. This paper discusses how to eciently utilize such important information on handwritten Chinese envelopes in order to improve the sorting performance. For this purpose, two particular problems are addressed, respectively. One is the location of destination address block (DAB) on the envelope, and a new bottom-up location method is described in detail. The other is the interpretation of handwritten Chinese destination address strings. We present our e€ort on using as many geometric constraints as possible in the string segmentation. Then a novel address interpretation algorithm with global optimization is proposed. It combines the segmentation, recognition and address context information by the best-path search. The e€ectiveness of the proposed algorithms is fully demonstrated by our experiments on real envelopes.

Segmentation of Handwritten Chinese Characters from Destination Addresses of Mail Pieces

In this paper, we illustrate a method to segment handwritten Chinese characters from destination addresses of mail pieces. Fast Hough transform is utilized to detect the reference lines preprinted on the mail piece. In the segmentation, subassemblies of Chinese characters are merged based on the structural features of Chinese characters and the subassemblies’ topological relations, viz. upper–l...

An Approach for Automatic Matching of Descriptive Addresses

Address matching (also called geocoding) is an applied spatial analysis which is frequently used in everyday life. Almost all desktop and web-based GIS environments are equipped with a module to match the addresses expressed in pre-defined standard formats on the map. It is an essential prerequisite for many of the functionalities provided by location-based services (e.g. car navigation). Sever...

A novel free format Persian/Arabic handwritten zip code recognition system

Article history: Received 13 January 2012 Received in revised form 22 April 2013 Accepted 22 April 2013 Available online xxxx In Iran like many other countries, the categorization of postal envelopes is executed manually, mostly based on the handwritten addresses and zip codes. That process is still slow and prone to man-made errors. Therefore, having an automated, accurate and efficient system...

A New Approach for Arabic Handwritten Postal Addresses Recognition

In this paper, we propose an automatic analysis system for the Arabic handwriting postal addresses recognition, by using the beta elliptical model. Our system is divided into different steps: analysis, pre-processing and classification. The first operation is the filtering of image. In the second, we remove the border print, stamps and graphics. After locating the address on the envelope, the a...
